Abstract

The short story entitled “Paputian ng Laba ” by Allan Derain is about a little girl named Lailani who lives in poverty but continues to work hard by washing other people’s clothes so that she and her family can get out of poverty. The researchers researched the challenges and difficulties that a Filipino household faces in sustaining their daily needs. The research found out the difficulties that Filipinos experience in their everyday lives and the effects of their problems, just like the circumstances Lailani experienced in the short story. The researchers used a qualitative research design in doing the research; they listed the important details that happened in the short story, and they also used an appropriate theory that is related to the literature. The short story of Allan Derain entitled “Paputian ng Laba” depicts the difficulties caused by the poverty that Filipino household faces in their everyday lives.
