Abstract

The study was conducted in Gawad Kalinga Village, Milibili Roxas City, as an adopted community of the College of Education-CapSU Roxas City Main Campus during the academic years 2017-2018, 2018-2019, and 2019-2020 to assess the development of the beneficiaries of the extension program through literacy and value formation. The study used experimental, qualitative, interview, and descriptive methods of research. Beneficiaries of the extension program were the 42 GK kids known as Sibol (ages 4 to 10 years old). The trainers consisted of students from various majors and faculty members at the College of Education. As to the literacy skills of the GK Sibol kids, results indicated that there was an improvement comparing before and after the intervention of the extension program. In listening skills, from low (2.60 mean) to high (4.06 mean); speaking skills of the beneficiaries became average (2.77 mean) from a low level (2.31); reading skill improved from low level (2.20) to high (5.15 mean); and writing skill was greatly improved from low level (2.30 mean) to a very high level (4.31 mean). Generally, the results revealed that from a low level of literacy skills, through the literacy program implementation, it resulted in a high level of (3.83 mean) progress among beneficiaries. Generally, results indicated that there was an improvement on the literacy skills measured among participants in the implementation of the extension program. The challenges encountered upon the conduct of the extension were the following: funds, transportation, distance of the school from CapSU, weather, schedule and time, and attendance among participants. Lastly, there are learnings that surfaced throughout the conduct of the program.
