Abstract
This study examined the factors relating to the interest and learning outcome in oral communication among Grade 11 Senior High School students in selected schools of Bayugan City Division for S.Y. 2019-2020. Using a descriptive research design, the study surveyed 125 students from Marcelina Senior High School and Bayugan City Senior High School through questionnaires. Data were analyzed using frequency count, percentage, weighted mean, correlation coefficient, and t-test to explore significant relationships between identified factors, student interest, and oral communication outcomes. The results revealed that students struggled with speaking English but recognized oral communication as a key tool for expressing ideas. They also identified tiredness, absenteeism, and boredom as obstacles to effective learning, with shyness limiting their participation due to feelings of insecurity. Regarding interest, students acknowledged that motivation fosters diligent study and strengthens reasoning and speaking abilities in English. From these findings, the study concluded that language challenges shape students’ capacity to articulate ideas, while tiredness, absenteeism, boredom, and shyness influence their effort to study and engage. Interest plays a motivational role, encouraging students to join discussions and express their thoughts. However, poor to average learning outcomes were linked to weak oral communication foundations developed during their Junior High School years. Based on these conclusions, the study recommended that teachers create engaging classroom strategies and activities that encourage students to apply oral communication skills in daily life. Students were also encouraged to maintain a positive attitude toward studying to reduce boredom and develop the confidence to interact and ask questions, helping to overcome shyness. Finally, it was recommended that future researchers explore additional factors to further validate and expand on these results.
