Abstract
This qualitative study explored the historical journey and sustained success of the Capiz State University Main Chorale (CMC), established in 1973. Using narrative inquiry within a constructivist framework, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving 15 current members, 5 alumni, and 5 stakeholders including conductors and administrators. Findings revealed that CMC evolved from a modest university ensemble into a wellrespected cultural institution. Its repertoire—featuring Filipino folk, Western classical, and contemporary genres—helped maintain its relevance across generations. Artistic excellence was enhanced through participation in competitions at regional, national, and international levels, which exposed members to innovative techniques and elevated performance quality. Strong, evolving leadership and structured rehearsal protocols were key to the chorale’s success. Systematic training, sectional rehearsals, and coaching fostered not only vocal and artistic development but also personal growth, including self-confidence, discipline, and leadership skills. Alumni engagement contributed to continuity by mentoring current members and supporting operations. The chorale’s resilience was demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it swiftly transitioned to virtual rehearsals and digital outreach to sustain activities. Beyond music, the CMC made a cultural impact through community engagement and by promoting Filipino heritage, significantly enhancing the university’s cultural identity and reputation. Despite facing challenges such as limited funding and recruitment pressures, the chorale’s achievements were sustained through institutional support, alumni involvement, and member commitment. CMC stands as a model of how university-based musical groups can preserve cultural traditions while nurturing artistic and personal excellence among students.
