Abstract

This research concerns the analysis of the short story “Kung sa bawat pagtawag ay pagtawid sa Gubat” written by Alec Joshua B. Paradeza,  from the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards popularly known as the Palanca Awards for literature, a program gives literary honor to writers in the Philippines. The short story “Kung sa bawat pagtawag ay pagtawid sa Gubat” was awarded a third prize at Palanca Award in year 2022. It refers to the historical experience of a gay guerrilla named Ruel who has great love and was longing for his gay boyfriend Ino, who separated from him due to conflict in society, beliefs, and responsibility as a guerrilla. This research aims to describe and explore the perspective, traditions, and beliefs of the characters to share the historical event that pertains to the experience of same-sex couples. This study used a qualitative design method, where the researchers read the short story and presented the important events related to the history that it includes. The research is anchored to the theory of realism and romanticism that deeper the understanding and analysis of the researchers. This study is important to expand awareness and strengthen the conversation regarding the issues of identity, discrimination, and other people who prefer same-sex couple. This study will serve as a basis for future researchers to further cultivate the ability to understand and respect the current historical problem related to this study.
